Understanding river dynamics in Nigeria

OceanWise Global > News & Projects > Uncategorised > Understanding river dynamics in Nigeria

OceanWise is part of an International project for the National Inland Waterways Authority of Nigeria (NIWA).

This latest part of the project, which is being orchestrated by their Licenced Partner Brewzone Africa LTD, involves the design, build and assembly, supply, and installation of two new Tide and Weather stations using ultra-modern sensors from Valeport, Gill Instrumentation and proprietary equipment and software from OceanWise. When installed, the system will provide essential tide and meteorological data to NIWA to support their operations and improve safety and efficiency as part of their core mandate to build the river economy of Nigeria.

The Permanent Tide Stations underwent an intense Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) in the UK in June which was completed by the OceanWise and Brewzone engineers, and signed off by head of NIWA’s Hydrographic Survey department Mr Henry Adimoha. The engineers meticulously checked each component making sure that the whole system works perfectly together and is fully fit for purpose, before it is shipped out to Nigeria. The monitoring stations come fitted with a range of Environmental Monitoring Equipment and include a Valeport VRS-20 Tidal Radar (tide), a Gill Instruments weather station (wind speed, direction, pressure, temperature, and humidity) a Valeport MiniCT (water conductivity and temperature) and an OceanWise ip-buffer (telemetry modem).

“This latest order forms part of a much broader project with NIWA. We are very excited to be part of making the vision of the leadership of NIWA and its hydrography team a reality. We are working with NIWA to have a long-term data governance plan, understand the existing data sources and the infrastructure in place to collect data, replace the old equipment with new ones, as well as implement software and other technologies to help position NIWA for the future. Nigeria`s river network has a big potential to contribute even more to the country’s GDP and it can be achieved if we understand the river dynamics scientifically.” CEO of Brewzone Africa LTD Mr. Nana Brew Comments

All the data from the equipment will be delivered in real-time via the OceanWise data platform Port-Log. The easy cloud-based platform allows NIWA’s teams to view, download, and share the data with those that need it and when they need it, supporting their vision to “make Nigeria the leader in inland water Transportation, development and management in Africa”.
