England’s inland waterways are under pressure – and the data is telling us something important

2025 brought record-breaking drought conditions across the UK’s canal and river network. Canal & River Trust reported that, at its peak, around 400 miles of the canal network were affected by navigation restrictions or closures. Meanwhile, embankment collapses in the North West at the start of the year highlighted just how vulnerable ageing infrastructure has become to increasingly extreme weather.

And bridges sit right at the intersection of these two challenges – structural assets that span dynamic, often unpredictable waterway environments.

Effective environmental monitoring isn’t just about measuring water levels. It’s about understanding how conditions change over time, detecting early warning signs before they become costly failures, and giving asset managers the data they need to make confident decisions.

Real-time sensor networks, continuous data telemetry, and integrated data platforms are shifting the way inland waterway operators and infrastructure owners approach risk. The shift from reactive inspection to proactive, data-driven management is no longer a future ambition – it’s happening now.

At OceanWise, we work with organisations managing assets in exactly these environments – deploying custom-built sensor systems and our Port-Log data platform to deliver the real-time environmental insight that underpins safer, smarter asset management
