Rochester Bridge Trust invests in data to support long-term sustainability

Rochester Bridge Trust (RBT) has invested in an environmental monitoring system, reinforcing its commitment not only to sustainability but also to continued improvements that help reduce disruption and support the local community.

“As an historic charity we understand the importance of utilising the best resources available for the long-term benefit of Rochester Bridge. This monitoring equipment is an efficient, easy to use tool that provides us with real time data, enabling us to make informed decisions about our maintenance activity.” James Booth, Director of Bridges, Rochester Bridge Trust

Rochester Bridge, which spans the River Medway, has been a vital crossing point for centuries, playing an important role in trade, transport, and infrastructure development. The Rochester Bridge Trust, which has been responsible for its upkeep since 1399, continues to invest in the long-term sustainability and safety of the bridge and surrounding environment.

In line with its dedication to reducing its carbon footprint, the Trust approached us to provide a monitoring solution that would provide real-time, accurate tide and weather data without the need for frequent manual intervention. The installed system at Rochester Bridge, supplied and implemented by us, enables remote monitoring of key environmental parameters, reducing the need for site visits and associated emissions.

The system is already delivering valuable data on water levels, weather conditions, and other essential factors, supporting the Trust in making informed decisions regarding bridge maintenance and safety. By leveraging our advanced technology, the Trust has minimised potential disruption to road and river users, ensuring a smoother and more efficient approach to environmental management.

All data from the monitoring equipment is delivered in real-time via our Port-Log cloud-based data platform. The new system not only allows the Trust to closely monitor changing tidal and weather conditions but also enables real-time and historical data sharing and issues alerts when key parameters are exceeded, supporting better operational planning and environmental management in the area.

The project marks another step in the Trust’s ongoing efforts to combine heritage conservation with modern environmental responsibility, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Rochester Bridge. Since 2022, all maintenance of Rochester Bridge is carried out at Net Zero Carbon:  https://rbt.org.uk/news/charity-achieves-net-zero-carbon-for-bridge-maintenance-activities/
